ISO Committee on Conformity Assessment
What is ISO/CASCO?
Presentation by Anna Koroleva, ISO/CASCO Secretariat. December 2, 2016.

CASCO Toolbox

The CASCO toolbox will help you identify existing conformity assessment tools, consider possible conformity assessment routes and select the solution that better suits your goals.  This online support is made of different sections that cover the basics of conformity assessment including terms and concepts, and offers case studies of specific industry sectors from around the world.  Some topics have links to relevant international standards, guides and other documents containing more detail, or further sources of information.

For regulators, it provides a tool for managing compliance and providing an objective and defensible means to implement public policy and enforce national health, safety and environmental legislation. The CASCO toolbox provides a means for organizations to take responsibility for their own compliance, and can reduce costs for governments when regulatory schemes utilize recognized private sector conformity assessment providers.

For manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and service providers, they can make sure that their products and services meet specified requirements and deliver on customer expectations. Assessing their products and services in accordance with the CASCO toolbox helps them to meet the current best practice and avoid the financial costs and reputational damage of product failure in the market, including subsequent activities such as product recalls, product returns and destruction of unsuitable product.

For importers and exporters the CASCO toolbox includes the recognized International Standards and Guides for conformity assessment procedures under the World Trade Organization Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (WTO/TBT Agreement). Application of the CASCO toolbox can be a basis for mutually accepting trading partners’ products and services, and avoiding unnecessary barriers to trade.

For Consumers, access to the CASCO toolbox provides them with a basis for selecting products or services in the market, including matters such as quality, price, safety, reliability, compatibility, interoperability, efficiency and effectiveness. Consumers may have more confidence in products or services that are supported by a formal mark or certificate of conformity that attests to quality, safety or other desirable characteristics.

ISO/CASCO has made available a series of training materials to explain the basics of conformity assessment.  It is a set of presentations composed of 9 modules developed by experts from the ISO committee on conformity assessment (ISO/CASCO).  The modules provide information on key aspects related to conformity assessment and are intended to be used as introductory learning tools and as useful resources for creating presentations by anyone who has general knowledge about conformity assessment.

The topics include explanations on the ISO, IEC and CASCO organizations, Quality Infrastructure, Conformity Assessment and its functional approach, the CASCO Toolbox, Accreditation, specific conformity assessment Standards, Conformity Assessment Schemes and the WTO Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Agreement.

All nine presentation modules are available to download from the ISO server.
